Abbreviations on medal roll

Hello

Can anyone help me understand the line in red at the end of this Royal Engineers medal roll entry

I think it might mean that the medals were returned in 1924 but would appreciate confirmation

Thanks

Clearer on his mic.

retd (992 KR 1923 ) 8426 Adr

Medals unclaimed after 1 year to be returned to the secretary at the war office.

presumably he or his next of kin did not claim them.

there is an earlier forum thread relating to this , can't work out on iPad to do it at work.

If he was OR then he did not have to claim his medals, they were sent automatically. But it may be that they were sent to an old address of record & he had moved & they did not reach him. Or for some reason they did not get to him but I think they were sent out initially.

Hi

Yes that is right, the medals for other ranks were automatically sent out to the address on their attestation form. If  they were not delivered (not at that address), they were sent back to war office and were eventually destroyed unless the soldier requested them. If you don't see IV and a date (Issue voucher) they were not sent back out from MOD.

You can apply to MOD now for them, I did for my Grandad.

regards

Robert
