Dear Members

Could someone tell me where the above was on August 17th 1915 please? It was somewhere on the Suvla area with the 53rd Division.

                                Thank you

                                       Regards

They were with the 159th Brigade, south of Anafarta Ova and the WD entry for that date states "Battalion employed improving Fire Trench"

The 159th Infantry Brigade WD entry for that date indicates planned advance of the line by 400 yards at night assisted by troops from 87th Brigade - "As however these troops did not arrive at Bge Hdqrs until 23.15 the operation was cancelled"

Although the Battalion WD continues to give their position as Anafarta Ova

I think that by the 17th they were not just south of Anafarta Ova, but in fact nearer to Sulajik.

[On the 13th the WD describes a move to the right when they took over trenches from part of the 160th Inf Brigade.

At this time the 160th Inf Brigade WD gives their position as Sulajik]

NOTE - these are the trench lines at the evacuation, NOT 17th August

Dear Michael

Thanks very much for your replies.

Not a lot going on Perhaps it should be stated that on the 16th the ill-fated Corps Commander, Sir Frederick Stopford, was relieved of his command and had not been replaced by Sir Julian . Byng. Other generals went and about the 17th Hamilton was asking for another 95,000 soldiers for the offensive to continue. Certainly nothing much had happened since the landings, most notably on the 8th. Stopford was waiting for artillery.

                                    Thanks again

                                           Regards

By the way you seem to have a few more posts than me!......quite a few.

Dear Members

Just to add that John Lindley, Divisional commander of the 53rd division, had tendered his resignation to Hamilton. He would be replaced by Major-General  W.R. Marshall. a Brigadier- General in the 29th Division at the landings the previous April. He was wounded above X beach..

                                       Regards
