grandpap Posted 16 August , 2018 Share Posted 16 August , 2018 I wonder if anyone is able to tell me the height requirement for a man serving in the RNVR in WW1 please? I am researching George Robert Ellison, Z/7666, RNVR Tyne Division, Service record ADM339/1/11606. He lived on a farm in Co.Durham. His service record states that he was 5ft 2½in, so too short for the Army, so I’m wondering if that might be the reason he ended up going to sea. Thanks in advance Helen
horatio2 Posted 16 August , 2018 Share Posted 16 August , 2018 (edited) The late 1914 recruiting poster for the RND specified: Age 18 to 38; Chest measurement 34 inches; Height 5ft 3 1/2. inches. Waivers were often given. He was discharged from the RND to sea service. His sea service record is here - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D7698314 His RNVR/RND enlistment papers are held by the Fleet Air Arm Museum (National Museum of the Royal Navy).
