BereniceUK Posted 15 August , 2018 Share Posted 15 August , 2018 Harry Jaques served in the 1st Scots Guards during the Anglo-Boer War; he made a court appearance in London, in April 1909, being found guilty of living on the improper earnings of a woman - sentenced to 2 months' hard labour. His surname appeared in the press as Jakes, aged 30. Is there any record of him serving during the Great War? He would have been around 35 at the outbreak of war. ss002d6252 Posted 15 August , 2018 Share Posted 15 August , 2018 He deserted on 1 Oct 1910 following his conviction. I can't see anything obvious for any further service for this man in WW1 - unless he used a different name, which would be likely as a deserter. BereniceUK Posted 15 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 15 August , 2018 Thanks, Craig. Another piece of info in the 1909 press report was that he was on Reserve pay before his trial.

Well spotted I'd be surprised if he didn't have further service so that could be a possibility. Is there a list of these men ? ss002d6252 Posted 17 August , 2018 Share Posted 17 August , 2018 It seems he was nearly at the end of his reserve commitment when he disappeared. I wonder if he'd got in to trouble again and made off on that basis. Craig
