Remembered Today:

Harry Jaques/Jakes

Harry Jaques served in the 1st Scots Guards during the Anglo-Boer War; he made a court appearance in London, in April 1909, being found guilty of living on the improper earnings of a woman - sentenced to 2 months' hard labour. His surname appeared in the press as Jakes, aged 30.

Is there any record of him serving during the Great War? He would have been around 35 at the outbreak of war.

He deserted on 1 Oct 1910 following his conviction.

I can't see anything obvious for any further service for this man in WW1 - unless he used a different name, which would be likely as a deserter.

Thanks, Craig. Another piece of info in the 1909 press report was that he was on Reserve pay before his trial.

He may have joined the pimperial yeomanry.

Well spotted

I'd be surprised if he didn't have further service so that could be a possibility. Is there a list of these men ?

It seems he was nearly at the end of his reserve commitment when he disappeared. I wonder if he'd got in to trouble again and made off on that basis.
