Guest Posted 14 August , 2018 Share Posted 14 August , 2018 I have a medal roll card with a service number G3 or G8/56198 for Frank CLAPSON, Royal Fusiliers. Very little other info. He was born 1900 so would have only served late on. What would the prefix G3 or G8 have indicated ? No service record of course, so is it possible to find his battalion or any info from war diaries or suchlike, though I know they don't usually mention names. Thanks. johnboy Posted 14 August , 2018 Share Posted 14 August , 2018 Are you sure the prefix is not GS?
Mark1959 Posted 14 August , 2018 Share Posted 14 August , 2018 (edited) Welcome. It is probably GS - this just means General Service edit. His Medal Index Card confirms it is GS. The Medal Roll shows he was overseas with 10th Battalion RF from 23/8/18 to 6/3/19. Edited 14 August , 2018 by Mark1959
clk Posted 14 August , 2018 Share Posted 14 August , 2018 (edited) Hi Cavair001, Welcome to the forum. From the medal rolls I think that he is likely to be GS/86198 Frank Clapson, who served overseas (France/Flanders) with the 10th Battalion 23rd August 1918 to 6th March 1919. Their war diary is here at the National Archives. Regards Chris Edited 14 August , 2018 by clk
