No E CAIN RMLI.

Edit: Probably Private Edward GAIN, Plymouth/948(S), RMLI. Surivived WW1 (demobilised) but died in WW2. K.i.a. as an Assistant Steward Merchant Navy when the SS ALMEDA STAR was torpedoed off Scotland by U.96 on 21 January 1941.

His brother Walter GAIN Plymouth/1009(S) was k.i.a. with 1st Royal Marine Battalion 19 August 1917.

Fantastic information horatio2 very impressive...

Russ,

You might want to check all of the transcriptions for typos because,

1) there was no East Sussex Regt,

2) the 1st Bn Royal Sussex Regt. spent the entire GW in India.

JMB

Thx JMB - the list I've posted was complied several years ago by another forum member. He wrote the list using the photograph earlier posted as his source!

fyi

1) should read East Surrey Regiment

2) should read 7th Royal Sussex

I will now correct the list using the original material.

WRFA RAMC TF

For clarity, this is presumably West Riding Field Ambulance, 6 of those in total serving with either 49th (West Riding) Division or 62nd (2nd West Riding) Division

Discovered detailed military history for R B Machan . Records clearly show his time spent at the North Staffordshire Infirmary.

https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&dbid=1219&h=1496907&tid=&pid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=TfK5388&_phstart=successSource

Was wondering if anyone with more experience than myself would care to glance over the records and give a synopsis?

Regards

Masses of pages, but not a lot in them really.

Looks as though he developed a cough with hoarseness of his voice in February 1917, severe enough for him to be sent back to the UK where he was initially at Stafford from March to June, then Sandon Red Cross hospital till mid July. In fact, at one stage, he had aphonia- total loss of voice.

Diagnosed as severe laryngitis and bronchitis. Had a laryngoscopy which only showed severe inflammation of the vocal cords. Tested and treated with whatever they had in those days ( not much), and condition gradually improved.  Discharged, then sent to Tipperary. Then to South West Africa in February 1918.

His little episode kept him out of front line action for a whole year.

Who knows what the cause was. Infection? Gas? (No record of it). Vocal abuse? Difficult to know now. The inflammation on laryngoscopy seemed genuine enough. I only mention that, as aphonia- (loss of voice) was a common symptom in cases of neurotic illness, hysteria, shell shock etc.
