Remembered Today:

Centenary of Sinking of UB-30

North Sea

Recommended Posts

Today marks the centenary of the sinking of the UB-30. On the 13th August 1918 the U-boat was surprised by a group of armed trawlers which included HMT Viola (still around) when following a northward bound convoy off the Yorkshire coast. After a initial attempt to ram the vessel which bent the periscope it was sunk by a combination of gunfire and depth charges after a hunt using hydrophone lasting some hours. One of the other vessels involved in the sinking was the Armed Yacht Miranda later purchased by Trinity House London and after being renamed Patricia was their flagship for many years. May the crew of the UB-30 Rest in Peace.

Dear All, and North Sea,

According to "Verschollen" (Naval Institute Press, 2002) by Dwight R. Messimer, the Cmdt of S. M. UB-30 was Oberleutnant zur See Rudolf Stier (1892-1918).

Kindest regards,

Kim.

This was arguably the Auxiliary Patrol's finest hour. Many claims were made for U-boat sinkings but few stand up to scrutiny.  The case of UB 30 demonstrates just what the Patrol could achieve with leadership, training, co-ordination and depth charges that worked.  The full story is given in Silent Warriors vol 1.
