Jamriggsy Posted 11 August , 2018 Share Posted 11 August , 2018 Hello all. I have a a bayonet which i am having trouble fully identifying due to the very poor condition of the steel. Infact i would question whether it is authentic just because the steel looks quite porous and not like any pictures i can find of similar items. Any help would be appreciated. Here what i believe it to be with markings that are clearly legible. 1907 pattern wilkinson bayonet shotened to blade length of 7.5" essentially making it a trench dagger. Overall length of just over 12" and a removed finial. "4 09" Manufacture date april 1909 "DT" dorsetshire regiment Other info. On the pommel under the clear "DT" stamp there appears to be possibly a "7 2" The Enfield mark is not particularly legible but i would say the the crown look ok then what appears to be "X 2" and then the "E". "X" bending mark. Purchased in belgium. Any help appreciated as i would like to understand more about it. Many thanks Jamie
MikeyH Posted 11 August , 2018 Share Posted 11 August , 2018 (edited) Well, that has definitely seen some use. Is certainly genuine, as the partial curve of a 'removed' hook quillon is evident. Maybe shortened in period as a trench knife, but this could equally have been done later in 'civilian' hands. The number stamped under DT, is a weapon number. Mike. Jamriggsy Posted 11 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 11 August , 2018 Well thats excellent news thanks Mike. I purchased it in belgium and out of a table or what was very interesting war arms and instruments this just kinda grapped my eye as it looks so "practical" and tacktile for want of a better word. The more i can find out the better.
Dave66 Posted 11 August , 2018 Share Posted 11 August , 2018 very nice find, I can only echo mikes comments with regard the conversion..this one certainly has the feel of a period trench knife but impossible to confirm without any provenance....well done.
