Paul Ormerod Posted 11 August , 2018 Share Posted 11 August , 2018 (edited) Remembering today, George Ormrod - Private 64808 - Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) - who died on 11 August 1918, and is buried in Bury (St Paul) Churchyard. The Soldiers Died in the Great War Database records that George was born in Bury, where he also enlisted in the Army. Prior to joining the Machine Gun Corps, George served with the Lancashire Fusiliers, with the Regimental Number 35462. George’s Service Record notes: 04/07/1916 - Initially posted to the Lancashire Fusiliers, as Private 35462 17/10/1916 - Transferred to the Machine Gun Corps 04/03/1917 - Posted to France 14/03/1917 - Posted to 169 Coy 04/06/1917 - Posted to B.D. 01/08/1917 - Posted to 169 Coy 25/09/1917 - Posted to B.D. 09/11/1917 - Posted to 167 Coy 04/01/1918 - Posted to R.D. Coy Both 169 and 167 Coys served with 56th (1st London) Division between March – December 1917, fighting at Arras, Third Ypres and Cambrai. George was wounded (suffering from exposure to gas) on 23 December 1917 (whilst serving with 167th Coy). He was admitted to hospital on 4 January 1918, but died on 11 August 1918, at Devenport Military Hospital – his cause of death being recorded as “gassed & appendicitis and actinomycosis”. George was the husband of Mary Ellen Ormrod (née Milnes), and the father of Nellie Ormerod (born on 9 August 1916). He was aged 30 at the time of his death in August 1918.
