BarbaraG Posted 8 August , 2018 Share Posted 8 August , 2018 (edited) Now really confused - having taken this photograph on visit to Anneux British Cemetery in November 2017 - recently came across difference in dates for death, 20th or 27th??? On further investigation the 30 Sept 1918 also appears.. I contacted the CWGC for clarification and received a reference to the Attestation Papers, which I had already seen and don't think there is any detail for death. http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/military-heritage/first-world-war/personnel-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=106055 However the Canadian Virtual Memorial references the CWGC for details.... http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/memorials/canadian-virtual-war-memorial/detail/187801?Frank Cline Not sure what I can add from CWGC I've found but have downloaded details.... https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/187801/cline,-/ There are different dates recorded Grave Registration Report - ?? 30 Sept 1918 (ditto mark??) Index No. Fr. 256 Annex Brit. Cem. page 11 - 20 Sept 1918 Comprehensive Report (A) of Headstone Inscriptions - date of death 27 Sept 1918 Can anyone can help or advise please. BarbaraG Posted 8 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 8 August , 2018 (edited) Many thanks Charlie - just found the link to the pdf file. The CWGC are going to update details. Once again makes me realise how amazing it is that so many records survive. Barbara Edited 8 August , 2018 by BarbaraG
MaxD Posted 8 August , 2018 Share Posted 8 August , 2018 27th would accord with the battalion war diary which records no casualties on 20th Sep but many on 27th, 28th and 30th. Max
BarbaraG Posted 8 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 8 August , 2018 Many thanks Max. I've also found an entry in the Circumstances of Death Registers for Frank CLINE confirming 27 Sept. 1918 k-in-a. Location of Unit at Time of Casualty - Vicinity of Bourlon Wood. On the reverse 'Remarks' Exhumed from: Sheet 57c.F.19.c.5.5. MaxD Posted 8 August , 2018 Share Posted 8 August , 2018 That is interesting. From looking at records of other men killed on the same day, I had suspected a possible "concentration" record which gives an initial burial but didn't find it. On the map/image at the link below, the cemetery can be seen on the south side of the Route Nationale (above Anneux to the left of the R in Route). The initial burial is about 200 yards directly south of the cemetery half way between the RN and the village. The wood at the top of the map/image is Bourlon Wood. https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=14&lat=50.1574&lon=3.1370&layers=101465167&right=BingHyb From the cemetery details: The original cemetery was made by the 57th Division Burial Officer and by various units in October 1918. At the Armistice it contained 131 graves but was then greatly increased when graves were brought in from the surrounding battlefields and small cemeteries in the area, including.... laughton Posted 8 August , 2018 Share Posted 8 August , 2018 Quote Hello Think I've contacted you previously regarding CEF. Not sure if you can advise but I have recently added some details in the Possible non comms section (not sure where to put query). https://www.greatwarforum.org/forum/68-possible-non-commemorations/ Having contacted the CWGC the records are being amended however the Virtual War Memorial details are based on CWGC records and show discrepancies with dates re. death. Any advice appreciated - can forward assorted refs. I've already found if of any help (barbara.grayson@btinternet.com). Hope this makes some sense Regards Barbara Barbara: You need to advise "John Brehaut (cvwm@vac-acc.gc.ca)" about the CWGC change to the records. He will then make the change on the CVWM. Clearly all documents say the 27th. I checked all of his documents, just to make sure. Richard of Canada
