WW1 Book Dealer in Midlands

KIRKY

Recommended Posts

A friend rang me and asked if I know of an honest book dealer who would be interested in buying/having a large WW1 collection of books,they are based in Solihull.

The Collecter passed away recently and his widow wants to dispose off the books but I need to know she will not be ripped off!

Any suggestions please.

just a thought, if he was a collector and there were a few interested forum members it may pay to post a list. ebay can give an idea of price. probably more than she could get going into trade. otherwise cold be a visit to a dealer at a militaria fair, but rather than call with a stack of books ,again  a list might help.

     Astley Book Farm.    Large-ish outfit-somewhere between Coventry and Solihull-Delightful premises in a country barn complex.

      (I am a pretty much retired bookseller and have no commercial connection with the lady that runs the shop-My one visit there was pleasant- even the dog was a charmer)

      Tom Donovan is best for anything older of the level of his catalogues. Modern stuff is a drug on the market-especially towards the end of the centennial years when publishers are dumping stocks as well. Modern books, unless highly specialist from specialist publishers may not fetch much). Listing most modern "Waterstones" type books on Ebay would not repay the time and effort.

Chaz, from what I was told there are 2 or rooms full making a list would take a long time!

    They are generalists- but if you have modern books in quantity, then they are both local and fair.  As I say, the normal run of Spellmount, Helion, etc will not fetch a great deal. You can try Hay Cinema/Francis Edwards who are close as well. They do understand older military books- the modern ones, you may find yourself with a lower price from them than Astley. Hay Cinema don't take prisoners. If you have older stuff of note, then Tom Donovan will trump Hay Cinema all day,every day.

    If you have fuller details of quantity, antiquarian v modern, then I could make further suggestions, probably by   PM.

This thread just reiterates other threads regarding your treasured collection after your departure from this mortal coil it is essential to leave some sort of plan for those left behind to avoid confusion etc regarding a subject they no nothing about ! and to allow them to realise the most from your collection   this something i shall be doing over the next {hopefully few years}

 Count them and phone to your choice.  If you note the names of any of the publishers that are represented more often than others, then mention them.

I sometimes sell to Astley Book Farm (mentioned above). I'm afraid they have recently posted a message on their website saying they are not open to buying at the moment. They are not military specialists.
