Remembered Today:

Any idea on shell fuses?

Recommended Posts

A few decades ago, on various trips to the Ypres Salient, I picked up some shell fuses from fields butting onto some cemeteries; I got permission before doing so of course & I was given a couple from an elderly Farmer who’d picked them up when he was a kid.

I’ve no idea what they are from & was hoping someone would be willing to part with some knowledge & enlighten me.

Lee,

#1. British No.80 FUZE c/w adaptor

#2. Possibly British No.100 FUZE

#3  Not 100% sure

#4  French, probably 30/38 FUZE

#5  British No.85 FUZE c/w adaptor.  American manufacture ALCO = American Locomotive Co.

Hope this helps,

Mike.

2 is a HZ 14 German fuse when I'm not mistaken

3 is a German lMWZ (leichte Minenwerfer Zünder)

Almost. It is an lWMZ - leichte Wurf Mine Zünder.

Minenwerfer is the weapon, a bomb or mine thrower. Wurf Mine is the round.

There is mention, by MickeyH, of ‘c/w adapter’....what is the ‘adapter’?

It's the bottom section attached to both your No.80 and No.85 fuzes. It's an adapter piece that allows the fuze with 2-inch thread to be used with the 2.5-inch thread of the Shrapnel shell body. It also caps off the resin matrixed lead Shrapnel balls, and locks the central tube that runs down to the black powder charge tin in the base of the shell.
