ID help wanted; AEF Engineers Carrying Case/Sleeve

What was this case used to hold? All I know is that the case belonged to a member of the AEF's 39th Engineers, which was a railroad operations unit that served in France. I'm guessing it held an instrument of some sort, given the protective sleeve and sturdy leather case. Anyone have a clue?

Andrew,

Wow, never would’ve guessed that. Is your case/sword original as a set? Military? Is the time period for the case in my photo right for the war?
