From what I can recall and find there were a number of handguns which included the following : Beholla 7.65mm. mainly a secondary or back up weapon ; the M1907 Dreyse in 9mm   ; Former  or Frammerschstop , 7.65 mm ; Luger 9mm ; Broomhandle 7.63mm , and the Reichrevolver . Of course there maybe others to add to the list which is quite few already althoughmost apart from the Luger and the C96 were not particularly great.

Someone I knew in a pistol club in the 80s had a Sauer & Sohn 1913 7,65 that he said his grandfather captured in the Great War, though I doubt he knew whether it had been official issue or not.

Thanks very much Gents.

 

So for the sake of my research, he's most likely to have been shot with either 7.65mm or 9mm (although we could never say that with 100% certainty).
