MSM cert.

hello members. I have a copy of my granddads cert. for MSM. Date of Gazette 13/3/1918. stamped East Africa. Im wondering ,is the medal earned in Africa but not awarded until 1918? He landed in November 1914.

Sometimes these medals were issued  to acknowledge a period of service as opposed to a specific event and this may be the case with your GF. The LG may well give a reason at the beginning of the section where the MSMs are listed, followed by the list of personnel who have been awarded the medal.

Found the soldier listed in the Library The Meritorious Service Medal-The Immediate Awards 1916-1928 (Library ref 355.134.2.MCI) Cross-refers to the London gazette citation which was a generic one :

"H.M. THE KING has been graciously pleased to award the MSM to the undermentioned WOs, NCOs and Men, in recognition of valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field during the present War " (73 names in the March 1918 LG).

So taken to be an acknowledgement of service over time rather than an incident.
