Gary Wall Posted 15 July , 2018 Share Posted 15 July , 2018 I'm researching my Great Uncle, Leonard Arthur Warner, a private in the 10th Hampshire Rgt, killed in action on the assault on Roche Noire on the 1st Sept 1918. I've been told his medal record card indicates he joined that campaign later on, can anyone tell me how I can find the date of when and where he enlisted ? Thanks !!! charlie962 Posted 15 July , 2018 Share Posted 15 July , 2018 Hello Gary, According to Soldiers Died in The Great War he enlisted at Fareham. As for date of enlistment a clever back calculation can be done using the War Gratuity identified on Soldiers Effects and feeding this into Forum Member Craig's calculator. charlie962 Posted 15 July , 2018 Share Posted 15 July , 2018 A 10 pound gratuity for a private who died 1/9/18 gives enlistment about June 1916. Charlie

Gary Wall Posted 15 July , 2018 Author Share Posted 15 July , 2018 Thanks for that ! Going to Greece on the 1st September to pay my respects and visit the Roche Noire where he was killed, trying to find out as much as I can. The notice from the Portsmouth Evening News is nice to know about, thank you. Leonard was the youngest of five Brothers, one being my Grandfather. ss002d6252 Posted 15 July , 2018 Share Posted 15 July , 2018 My new calculator provides a more specific result than my old calculator did (along with more ancillary information) https://wargratuity.uk/war-gratuity-calculator/ Craig
Gary Wall Posted 15 July , 2018 Author Share Posted 15 July , 2018 Thanks to that info I've found the original notice and never knew my Grandfather was referred to as "Will" when he was younger so thanks again for that Charlie !
