Capt S.S.Jones - Middlesex Regt

Stephen Sydney Jones b. 1890 Shropshire was the last 1XV captain prior to ww1.

He was a schoolteacher in Liverpool at the Bluecoat Hospital and Wavertree Blind School.

Can anybody confirm I have his correct MIC which just states Stephen S. Jones, Capt Middlesex Regt and home address Salop, Shropshire where his parents lived.

Any further information to build up his club profile about his military career would be most grateful.

Wellington Journal 6th February 1915

 

"Mr. S. S. Jones, son of Mr. J. B. Jones, Pontesbury, is appointed Lieutenant in the 15th Middlesex Regiment. He joined the Montgomeryshire Yeomanry on the outbreak of war, from which he was given a commission."

According to 1939 list he was born 15/5/1890 and died 20/4/1957 (probate).  

Teacher's Registration form 1/11/1924 has him with Elmore Green Central School, Walsall from 1921.

Teaching Training at St John's Training College Battersea.

Blue Coat 1912-13. Wavertree Blind School 1913-14

There is a medical record for SS Jones Capt Mx Regt. Shows 2 years service and 4 months in field force. Age 26. It is a record for 139th Field Ambulance. 21/8/1916. Thence to 1 NZ Stationary Hospital on 31/8/16. Debility, Necrosis. Unit 23rd Battalion Mx.

FWR lists a Temp Capt SS Jones, seniority date 13/3/1916 with the 23rd.

So the medical record seems to be for same man as MIC - 4 months between admission and date on MIC.

Age is correct for the teacher.

Could he also be known as Sydney Stephen Jones?

'Sydney S' appears to be initially 27th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment. The P number would then make him this man (file  held by the MoD)...

 

The DoB would appear to tie back to the date that Mark found.

Thanks for all that, I've checked all the club paperwork and he's always referenced as S.S, no firstname.

He seems to be quite a stocky bloke 1913-14

With him working at the Blind School and Hospital he must have had great patience and empathy with the infirmed and underprivileged which I admire greatly.

Bluecoat Hospital was a school/orphanage, my granddad was thrown in there when the family got too big.

This teacher registration shows he had the "Teachers Certificate of College of Teachers of the Blind".

The marriage you show is  to Olive Mary Major. Olive M is the wife's name on the 1939 register  (born 21/7/1895) and she was granted probate, 

A tree shows marriage was at Shrewsbury St Chad 28/1/1920 - no doc evidence with it. 

SSJ's brother Thomas Leonard Jones, 15th Infantry Battn AIF was killed at Gallipoli 3/5/1915 aged 19.
