Remembered Today:

8th KRRC 1918

I am researching a soldier (Rfn R/15593 Richard Ponder), for a friend who was serving with 8th KRRC.

It showed he Died of Wounds on 21st March 1918.

As this was the first day of the Kaiserschlacht I assumed he was killed during this but as he is shown as DoW I'm unsure.

He also has no known grave so if he was buried his grave was lost.

Can anyone give me information on the actions of 8 KRRC during the period before and during 21st March 1918?

LOTS of material here on the Forum about 8/KRRC in the Kaiserschlacht.

Try searching using these terms -

  • Kaiserschlacht
  • 14th (Light) Division
  • 7th, 8th, 9th KRRC
  • 7th, 8th, 9th RB
  • Jussy

Also Andy (stiletto_33853) and I will have posted in them.

I'm away from my books just now, but I'll take a look specifically for R/15593 Ponder once reunited.

What was the name of Ponder's friend also serving in 8/KRRC?  I may be able to turn up info on him too.

Sean,

Local boy to me living at 14 Gossett Avenue, Prittlewell, although he does not appear in the Southend and District Roll of Honour. Enlisted at Southend in September 1915 and went into the 15th KRRC which was just about the time the 15th KRRC moved to Seaford from Aveley, originally being based in the Southend area. I am sure that you are aware that his service record survives.

If you need the diary having looked up the other threads then just let Mark or myself know.

Andy

PONDER Richard. Rifleman, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Lived in Southend. Died  21.3.1918. Aged 29. With no known grave he is commemorated at POZIERES MEMORIAL, PANEL 61 – 64, FRANCE

Mark/Andy

Thank you for the above.

I'll do some digging and I'm back on Ancestry in August.

It's for a couple who attend our WFA Meetings, just using SDGW gave them information they didn't have so the surviving record will be like gold to them.

Hi Sean,

In addition to his service record. FMP has a miscellaneous record for him - nothing of any real significance though.

15th King's Royal Rifle Corps

Daily Orders. Part II

Station: Seaford

Date: 28th September 1915

Leave, Ordinary

Granted leave, 13.9.15* to 17.9.15

At that time he was recorded as being in 'A' Company

Regards

Chris

Edit:

*This is the same as his enlistment date

Chris

Thank You for the above.

It's all significant, his relatives have/had no information on him.

Just to round this off, I can report I did check my KRRC material but found nothing on top of what Andy and Chris have unearthed.
