Guest steveb21 Posted 9 January , 2005 Share Posted 9 January , 2005 Mates, What can you tell me about two Training units in Norfolk. 12th Res Sqn at Thetford and 53rd Res Sqn at Swaffhon (unsure of this spelling). Both units were where Lt CHF Nobbs trained between March and May 1917 before joining 66 Sqn in France were he was brought down 22nd August 1917 and made PoW. Do you also have any detail on who brought him down and where? Cheers S.B
Kate Wills Posted 10 January , 2005 Share Posted 10 January , 2005 Steve I think Swaffhon should be Swaffam
Dolphin Posted 10 January , 2005 Share Posted 10 January , 2005 Steve I can't help you on the Reserve Squadrons, but I can advise that 2Lt C H F Nobbs was flying Sopwith Pup A6183 of No 66 Sqn on a mission to bomb an enemy aerodrome on the Ypres Front when brought down and taken PoW on 20 September 1917. Guest steveb21 Posted 10 January , 2005 Share Posted 10 January , 2005 Thanks Mate, Was that by AA fire or another aircraft? S.B
Dolphin Posted 10 January , 2005 Share Posted 10 January , 2005 S B The cause of the loss isn't mentioned in the references I looked at, and there doesn't appear to be a corresponding claim from a German Jasta pilot, so ground fire would be the best bet, followed by engine failure.
