Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery Case #3: Capt. with Pte. Willis at Ronssoy Woods

I will need to come back to this to do some further research, but there is something definitely wrong here. The remains are on the SW edge of the woods, again in the Captain Crofton area, but the 2nd Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers were nowhere near that area where the remains were found (62c.F.20.b.1.3). The war diary (page 11 of 101) tells us they were at Artemps (66d.L.17). The area where the remains was flooded with men of the 16th Irish Division. The COG-BR places the Captain and Private Wills (KIA 21-03-1918) at that area. There are 5 other Privates by that name missing at the same time (CWGC Link).

If it was a Captain of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers then it had to be Captain John Forsyth Harvey of the 9th Battalion (36th Division), the only one missing in March and April 1918 (CWGC Link). Clearly he was not in the area either (war diary page 195 of 258). Most definitely he is listed as a casualty (war diary page 201 of 258).

Do they have the wrong Wills on the headstone? More research required!

Private J. S. Cumming #17902 (KIA 21-03-1918) of the 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers also listed as being found in that location. He was initially listed as Cummings ("s" on the end) and was identified by a G.R.U. Cross, the same as Private Wills noted above. The initial "J" and the number "17092" was added to the COG-BR 2052713  at a later time.

doc2052713.JPG

I prepared a spreadsheet of all the men of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers that are listed for the Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery and these are the only two (plus the Unknown Captain and there may be other Unknown OR) who were not in the area at the time of their death. I have made two (2) corrections to the CWGC database noting that 2nd Lieutenant Wilkinson was attached to the 7th/8th Battalion from the 4th Reserve Battalion. Also that Captain R. T. Sutton was with the 6th Battalion, not the 7th Battalion.

It is only Wills and now Cumming that do not fit into this list. As with Private Will, there were three (3) other British soldiers with the last name "Cummings" (with the "S") that died during this period (CWGC Link). All 3 have unknown graves. We can eliminate Pte. David Cummings (20th DLI) as he was at Vaulx-Vraucourt (TMC 57c.C.26). Similarly Rifleman Francis Edward Cummings #A/205300 (7th KRRC) was at Benay (TMC 66c.H.21). Serjeant Vincent Cummings of the 18th MGC is at Rouez (TMC Map 70e).

If the name was "Cumming" (no "S") then a likely candidate is Rifleman Sidney Cumming #43760  1st Bn, Royal Irish Rifles. They were at  for near Grand Seracourt (war diary page 11 of 70) TMC 66d.G.8. That does not fit either! How about Rifleman Ernest Nicoll Cumming #S/34207 of the 2nd Bn. Rifle Brigade? Nope he was at Chaulnes (TMC 66d.A.5) then to Morchain (TMC 66d.C.13), as per war diary (page 359 of 420).

Since we know that Captain Richard Thomas Sutton (KIA 3 October 1918) of the 6th Battalion (LLT: 151st Brigade, 50th Division) is buried in the Templeux-le-Guerard British Cemetery (Plot 1 Row H Grave 47) it makes sense that the 6th Battalion was in the area at that time. The 6th Battalion did not join the 151st Brigade until 16 July 1918.

These are the other Captains of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers that are missing in France:

Captain Huskinson did not have a unit affiliation on the CWGC but there was a record at the IWM with the information.

A quick check of Captain Verner (the only one on the Cambrai Memorial) tells us he was missing on 6 December 1917 (war diary page 174 of 258). They were "in the line" but I have yet to find the place. He was missing with Lieutenant Woods (see Lieutenant list below).

There are no Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers Majors missing in France, so that eliminates any Captain that may have been in an acting or temporary Major position.

These are the Lieutenants that are missing in France, in the event that one of them was an Acting/Temporary Captain:

Back to checking on the Captains.

A quick check of Captain Verner (the only one on the Cambrai Memorial) tells us he was missing on 6 December 1917 (war diary page 174 of 258). They were "in the line" but I have yet to find the place. He was missing with Lieutenant Woods (see Lieutenant list below).

Going back to the beginning of the month, they moved from Bancourt (57c.H.36) to Bertincourt (57c.P.7) and then on to Havrincourt Wood (57c.Q.7), so they are just north of Metz-en-Couture. That puts them about 8,000 yards north of Epehy adn 12,000 yards north of the Ste. Emilie / Ronssoy area where the remains were found.

Five of 9th Battalion Captains were lost on the first day of the Somme Offensive, where their objective was given as the point christened LISNASKEA (57d.R.20.c.7.4) just to the north of Thiepval. The war diary (page 45 of 258) saves us an extra step, as it says that on 1 July 1916 the 10th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers were on their left, so that accounts for 6 of the unknown Captains - probably 7 as the 32nd Division was on their right (2nd Bn RIF - see LLT). Captains MacLean, Cruikshank and Pelly are names as commanding companies 1-3 respectively.

That leaves only Captain Ritty of the 7th Bn, which should read 7th/8th Battalion, as they amalgamated on 23 August 1917. THey were in the area of Croisilles (51b.T.23), southeast of Arras.

We can now conclude that it was not a Captain of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers that was found to the southwest of Ronssoy Wood (62c.F.20.b.1.3).

Logic tells us that if anyone from the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers was in that area, then it had to be in March 1918 when the 16th Division was the predominant unit in the area. That means it was someone from the 7th/8th Battalion who moved into the defense of Ronssoy on 8 March 1918 and again on 20 March 1918 (war diary page 50 of 199). Captain Robbins (buried in Ste. Emilie), the Adjutant, was reported missing and 2nd Lt Wilkinson was killed (and buried in this cemetery - Templeux-le Guerard). Captain Robbins had been an "Unknown British Officer R.I.F." (grave 1.F.4) on COG-BR 2044519, found at 62c.F.19.a.9.9, so very close to the remains of the Unknown Captain. An unknown RIF Private was found at the same location.

There were 287 men of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers killed between the 21st and 25th of March 1918, of which 70 were of the 7th/8th Battalion (CWGC Link). The war diary (page 52 of 199) reports 3 Officers KIA, 1 DOW, 8 POW and 2 MIA. Captain Martin, who had taken over as Adjutant was still alive and signed the war diary.

I prepared an Excel Spreadsheet of the casualties of the 7th/8th Battalion (70 records) to check the names and locations. Interesting that there is a Private Wells found at 62c.F.20.b.1.5 (versus Private Wills at 62c.F.20.b.1.3), which both show up on the COG-BR documents already posted above. That may lead us to a solution, another mix up! Some of the Officers were missing so I ran it again with just 7th Battalion and picked up the rest, for a total of 82. I removed the one in Belgium (see note below), so we net out at 81 casualties. Only three (3) Officers are listed and only 2nd Lt T. J. Johnston has no known grave (12th Bn attached to 7th/8th Bn).

Does anyone see any other possibility for an Officer at this location?

On a separate but interesting topic:

We have a little CWGC glitch here for March 1918 as Lance Corporal Dowson #27088 was 49th TMB RIF and found in Belgium (28.D.22.d.4.8 COG-BR 2155866), which is just north of Zonnebeke near Moulin Farm. I have not figured that one out, as the 49th TMB was part of the 49th Brigade with the 7th/8th Battalion. What was he doing in Belgium? On GRRF 2155078 he is listed first as 4/Y.T.M.B.,RIF, which was changed to 49th and 7th/8th, and his rank was changed from Lance Corporal to Private. Only the number stayed the same. His Medal Card only says Private, R Innis Fus. There was a Y.49 Medium Trench Mortar Battery in the 49th Divisional Artillery (West Riding Division) (see LLT). The war diary of the 49th Divisional TMB R.A. tells us the "Y" Battery was in Belgium in March 1918 (war diary page 132 of 165), near 28.J.4, so less than 1,500 yards from where the remains were recovered .  A large shell burst in the entrance to the tunnel on the 21st.

Welcome to GWF.

Interesting.

How completely have you researched/how much have you discovered about his service?

Should you wish GWF to look into his personal service then I strongly advise that you start a new thread as this one is really intended for a different purpose by/for the late Richard Laughton's enquiries.

I feel sure GWF will be happy to swing into action should you wish
