This is still an interesting piece, true Mole or false Mole, and I would hold onto it.

We’ll see what others think of it.

I have to agree, and at the end of the day it's not hundreds on a fake hooked Quilion, that would hurt.

You never know there may be some redeeming unit markings or stamps to the grips. Have to wait and see till it gets here.

Have given the Sanderson a bit of a clean and have some better pics of unit stamps and scabbard markings. Is that possibly NF (Northumberland Fusiliers) or as we previously thought NL??

I could go with NF.......or not; still somewhat ambiguous.

Have never previously seen a stamp low down on the grip; is it 5/T ?

Chape has RE = Remington; Locket has EFD markings; all normal.

Will try the chalk ? NF looks better than the NL. Have to see if the NFS had a 5th T. I know the N Lancs did.As to the grip stamp definate 5 probable T. ?

Northumberland would tie in as it was sourced in Newcastle.

Any tips on preservation/restoration of the scabbard metalwork ?

thanks for you continued interest and knowledge.

Richard.

by the way couldn’t find any marks on the Winchester P13 scabbard, thick coat of green paint ? All over.

Hard to pin down that one due to the pitting, one minute it looks like an F then another image an L, even with the fresh pictures, both battalions had a 5th that saw action in France and Flanders so either way it was more than likely in the thick of it.

Since this not of museum quality, I would only use a nylon bristle toothbrush to remove dirt and any loose rust.

Then a coat of light oil to prevent further rusting; re-apply every 6-12 months.

Pity about green scabbard, but not worth stripping the paint to determine any markings.

JMB

No sorry, nothing definitive or, to be honest, even strongly suggestive. Some similarities in the bend test mark etc and the single E inspection but that's it.

All of the usual suspects are present.

Dated: 7? 17?

Re-inspected: ‘22, ‘24, ‘27

Viewers marks: crown/X6/E etc

Remains of Broad Arrow indicates British Govt. ownership

Remains of X indicates the convex side of the bend test

RE on the locket indicates manufacture of the locket (and possibly the whole scabbard) by the Remington Arms Co. USA

JMB

Plus being a WILKINSON / PALL MALL with the PALL MALL scrubbed out!

OH DEAR

Gentlemen , on my day off today after a visit to town I find myself in a quandary !

seen a Sanderson and an Enfield both in reasonable condition also a Lithgow with frog , what to do (all P 1907) which in your learned opinions is the most desirable ??

Unfortunately finances allow only one purchase.

Yours in anticipation Richard.

Lithgow - you might not see another!

Richard,

Damned if I know!

Dave, you’re up......

Seriously, I would expect the locket & chape to have the 7-pointed star and /or MA that are present on the blade.

Overlooked the scabbard - USA type, probably Remington? - and frog - Pattern 1939, normally used by the Home Guard. Wire fittings for fitting onto USA webbing.

Dave Hi,

there were two lithgows

1 dated 2/20 with a efd scabbard

2nd one 1942 or 43with correct Aussie scabbard and matching date. Wasn’t sure which one was more desirable and was hoping to get your thoughts ( I did max the credit card!)

The P13was in such good nick and being a rarer Winchester I was tempted then the seller offered to swap the scabbard and include the frog so It came home with me.

Yes (catching up here on post-by-post basis!), forget the Lithgows go for the others!
