Brith awards to Belgians

Here is a question that I am sure that there is no one answer too.

What British awards could be made, and/or were made to Belgian combatants, civilians and veterans?

According to WO/388:

GCB, GCMG, KCB, KCMG, CB, CMG, DSO, MC, OBE, MBE, DCM, MM, MSM, RRC Class1, RRC Class2.

The file shows a total of 1,287 awards, the preponderance being to members of the Armed Forces.

The associated London Gazette entries run from 25 June 1915 to 8 May 1922.

The British War Medal was awarded to Belgian Agents, and quite possibly to other Belgians too.

Quite a few awards of the Medal of the Order of the British Empire were granted to Belgian Agents, with 626 of both military and civil divisions going to Belgians overall.

What's the name please as I have seen BWM's to Belgians and when I put the name in usually only the one hit comes up on LG.

Hi ForeignGong,

The BWM I have is to Michel Boone. I started a thread about it when I got it. Sadly I have been unable as of yet to find out much about him. I have the medal roll which gives his address and the London gazette entry for his MID after that the trail went cold.

Is this the LG you have

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/31526/supplement/10858

if so this is a list of the 3131 Belgian Agents that were awarded a British War Medal for as the Preface states

The names of the undermentioned are to be

added to those brought to notice for dis-

•tinguished and gallant services and devotion to

-duty by Field-Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, K.T.,

G.C.B., G.C.V.O., K.C.I.E., Commander.-in-

Chief of the British Armies in France, in his

despatch of the 8th November, 1918

Type in "Belgian Agents" in the search window at the top RH corner of this page there are some very good threads on the subject.

Don't forget the British "Allied Subjects Medal", which was instituted in 1922 and awarded to Belgian and French civilians, who assisted British and Commonwealth soldiers behind enemy lines.
