CROONAERT Posted 21 June , 2018 Share Posted 21 June , 2018 Just a note to mention that the second book of the quintet about 'The French on the Somme' covering (as a series) the French Army actions on the Somme from August 1914 through to December 1916 has just been released. As the title suggests, this volume covers an area ever so familiar to the British battlefield visitor but looks at the period and actions before it became a British sector.... Published by and available from Pen & Sword amongst other sellers...

Sly Posted 24 June , 2018 Share Posted 24 June , 2018 (edited) Hi, Thank you very much, I am looking forward to read it ! I have a question: how far south to the Somme sector does the book cover ? I mean does it stop at Chilly-Maucourt, or does it go further south (la Chavatte, Fouquescourt, Roye sector, bois des Loges, etc...) ? Merci ! Hello Sly, The 'Serre to the River Somme' volume covers just the area north of the River Somme roughly covering the square Peronne-Albert-Foncquevillers-Beugny for 1914 (and 1871!) and the 1914-15 frontline from Hébuterne to Fargny. (The 'Somme 1916' volume goes as far south as Chilly, but for the 1916 battle only.) The next volume in the series (cover image attached to this post) is scheduled for publication in early 2019 and will continue the story of 1914-15 as far south as the border with the Oise department (in other words Tilloloy/bois des Loges). With the 'Serre to the River Somme' book being at a length of 264 pages and a potentially similar amount being for the 'South of the River' book, a combined volume would simply have been far too large for a 'Battleground Europe' book. This is the reason for a 'north' and 'south' volume being published with the Somme river serving as a convenient separation point. Dave.
Sly Posted 25 June , 2018 Share Posted 25 June , 2018 Hi Dave, Thank you for the information, I am so happy to see a guide book about "my" sector of the frontline ! There are so many interesting things to see there... Congratulations (in advance) to the author. Sly
Fattyowls Posted 25 June , 2018 Share Posted 25 June , 2018 I'm with Sly on this one Dave, I've wanted to read something like this for decades. For a lot of British visitors to the Somme everywhere beyond Maricourt is a blank, I remember one guy I spoke to being surprised that the French had been involved at all. Which is like crime in a multi storey car park - wrong on so many levels. Pete. P.S. I still haven't forgotten about buying you that beer Sly, perhaps we should organise a tour around it.
