Trying to find details for J BOWMER 46718 RGA (Enlisted 09 October 1914)

20138 King's Shropshire Light Infantry (Discharged 31 July 1918)

Have found some details in Burnt Documents - he sustained a bullet wound of spine, 20 November 1917 Cambrai front.

He died 14 February 1919. He was born in Sandiacre, Derbyshire and his family later lived in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire.

Wondering whether he was awarded a SWB or if his details appear on the Soldier's Effects Register.

Any help/advice appreciated

Barbara

He appears in the Daily Casualty Lists at least twice:

24th October 1916 wounded   Shropshire LI  (wounding probably a month earlier)

22nd December 1917   wounded   Shropshire LI (this will be the one you referred to above)

Yes he is on the SWB list here on Ancestry  Discharged 31/7/18

Yes He is in Effects here on Ancestry

The effects details would indicate that he was still a serving soldier when he died. This would explain why there would be no SWB as it was given out on discharge.

Came across Facebook ref. 'King's Shropshire Light Infantry Battlefields' November 20, 2017. Lots of interesting details about events 'The Battle of Cambria'.

There is also a reference for Pte Bowmer with info. from service papers (pension) and Ludlow Adv. 05-01-18 second wound of war???

Frustratingly I can't find the newspaper reference - any advice please?

Thank you Busterfield - that's him. So sad to read details of his injury.

Again thanks to everyone - the pieces are coming together.

Somehow read straight past your post (not sure how !) - the effects entry is even odder in that respect as it is not marked up in the usual way (nor are other men on the same page). A strange anomaly.

Hoping to visit the cemetery where he is buried tomorrow....more details to follow.

Will be hoping to find a family headstone.

Update - unable to locate a headstone but have grave reference - his sister died in 1917 and his father in 1920 - there are two family

graves, sad times for this family. Now waiting to receive DC for clarification of of death for Joseph.

Hello Charlie

Where might I access the Daily Casualty Lists? His first wound does not appear to be recorded on his Papers. His DC gives primary cause of death as the gunshot wound received 1yr 3 months before.

That 1916 record is available on Forces War Records here

You may also find it on TheGenealogist or on FindmyPast (incl local newspapers)

But the Daily casualty lists do not tell you where, exactly when, and how he was wounded.

I missed it previously but FWR also have a hospital admissions record- (perhaps now available on FindmyPast) showing detail of this 1916 wounding.

C Company 6th Bn SLI,  GSW right shoulder (slight) ,  Ginchy 19/9/16, discharged back to duty at Base Depot 28/12/16.

How does that fit with service record ?

Wound may have been slight but he was off for 3 months.

That is inevitable when you read his Pension record. Bullet wound to spine. Paralyzed, 100% disability, muscle wasting.. They attempted unsuccessfully to remove the bullet. A long drawn out death.  I see his military character on discharge was 'very good', steady, honest and trustworthy. Another good man lost.

He needs to be remembered on CWGC. Did you get any response from Terry ?

Many thanks for your replies Charlie - will put findings together to send to Terry. Wanted to wait for DC before sending details.
