aengland Posted 20 June , 2018 Share Posted 20 June , 2018 Help please from someone on this great If anyone lives in the Horsham area I would be extremely grateful if a photograph of a grave is taken for me. The individual I need is Robert Blatchford, not a serving soldier but an influential man in the years prior to, and during, the Great War. I know he was living in Horsham when he died and I am making an assumption that he is buried there. I know that Horsham claim him as a 'famous person' so I think my assumption is right.... well, I sincerely hope so! I am further assuming that he is buried in the cemetery or churchyard. If you can help me then I would be very grateful.... I need this for my extensive project on a west Norfolk village in the Great War.... a place where Blatchford also lived. Thank you in advance Andrew England
aengland Posted 16 July , 2018 Author Share Posted 16 July , 2018 Just re-posting / placing it at the top of the pile again (I hope that is allowed, apologies if if is frowned upon) in the hope that someone from that geographic area who missed it last time, might see it this time. Thank you in advance Andrew

PRC Posted 16 July , 2018 Share Posted 16 July , 2018 Although he split from the Fabian side of the Labour Party there was I believe a tendency for many early twentieth century socialists to believe in cremation. He argued against god in later life so a churchyard seems unlikely.Your best bet might be to use a source like the British Newspaper Archive to see if you can track down a local press report that covers the funeral \ cremation or a death notice - access is free via your local library if you have a library card. (You can also see pre-1900 on your home computer using your Norfolk library card but after that date you have to use a computer at the library). The Times have an obituary and death notice for him in the edition dated Saturday, December 18, 1943 but sadly no mention of funeral or cremation. There is a letter querying a point made in the obituary from one of his co-editors at The Clarion in the edition dated Thursday, December 23 1943 but again no mention of funeral or cremation. (Again, courtesy of my Norfolk County Library card I can see the Times Archive from home). The 1944 probate calendar records that Robert Peel Glanville Blatchford of The Firs, Kings Road, Horsham, Sussex died on the 17th December 1943. Probate was granted on the 26th April 1944 to Winifred Norris Blatchford, spinster. His effects were valued at £4,593 1s 11d. https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/Calendar?surname=Blatchford&yearOfDeath=1944&page=1#calendar Hope that helps, Peter (in Norfolk :-)
RaySearching Posted 16 July , 2018 Share Posted 16 July , 2018 Hi Andrew an internet search for Blatchford brought up this partial transcript Newsletter - Horsham Society www.horshamsociety.org/members/newsltrs/hs1005.pdf after campaigning journalist Robert Blatchford, who after a long .... after a funeral attended by no more than a handful of people, was buried at Hill's cemetery. Unfortunately the link brings up an error 404 message But it gives a clue that he may be buried in Hills Cemetery in Horsham, West Sussex, It may be advantages contacting The Horsham Society They may be able to assist I understand they can also be contacted on Facebook or Twitter I have accounts for neither Ray
