Hi

I have found, what looks like this job title - 'General Duty Orderly' on my great-great Uncle's Certificate of Employment during the War - he was in the 139th Field Ambulance but i don't know what this role did, please can someone enlighten me.  He didn't, as far as i can find out, have any medical qualifications before he joined up in 1916.

Thanks

Some RAMC personnel were specialists - nurses and dispensers, for example - and the rest were "general duties". This would have included stretcher bearers and what today we would call hospital porters.

Thanks Ron, that's interesting as this man's brother was also in the RAMC - he was a chemists assistant and went on to become a Pharmacist.
