Hi,

Does anybody have a trench map around Hooge in September 1915. I am specifically looking for the location of 1st Wiltshire on 25 Sept 1915. They were situated near Halfway House(?) and Grafton, Union and Castle Streets (?).

Thanks

John

Welcome to the Forum !

You may have seen the long account for 26th Sep 1915 in the unit War Diary WO95/1415/2 on the Discovery database (or on Ancestry UK) but there are no maps as Appendixes, so it may be more successful accessing the War Diary of 7 Infantry Briagade HQ for t his period (WO95/1413/4).

Here's clip from NLS for squares 28.I.17 & 28.I.18

No names but from Jon's table above you should get the general idea of location.

Hi John,

I had a quick look at the 7 Infantry Brigade HQ; 3 Division HQ (General Staff, and A&Q); Commander RE and Commander RA (3 Division) diaries but didn't see any maps. The best that I found was a sketch map for the medical arrangements for the assault on25th September 1915, in the diary for the Assistant Director Medical Services, 3 Division. It shows Castle Street (a communication trench).

That's really interesting. I think that I read that they were in the Brigade reserve on the day. The map shows Upper/Lower Grafton Street, and how they related to Regent Street and Conduit Street. The latter are also shown on the sketch map that I posted. I wonder if (also given the reference to Castle Street) they were in the section just shy of the Menin Road.

Regards

Chris
