Wilfred Owen at Ripon Cathedral

Recommended Posts

It seems that Wilfred Owen spent his last birthday at Ripon. The chapel in the north west corner of the cathedral is now a chapel for the armed forces and has a quotation from him on the reredos.

Yes he did... to mark 100 years of the end of the Great War his own personal bugle was brought over from France to be played in Ripon Cathedral at the closing event of the fields of mud, seeds of hope memorial. I was fortunate enough to be there...

I was a student in Ripon in the 80’s. We studied the war poets (in Amsterdam, long story) and when we got back to Ripon I went on my own little pilgrimage to find the house he had stayed in. Just one part of what sparked my interest in the Great War. Thank you for the photos, I haven’t been back there for some years but will go into the Cathedral next time we have a reunion.
