Mark Hone Posted 9 June , 2018 Share Posted 9 June , 2018 (edited) In memory of Bury Grammar School old boy Arthur Smith, who died of severe head injuries while being taken to a dressing station near Fouilloy on 9th June 1918, aged 21. He and his brother Harry Crompton Smith (died January 1916) are one of seven pairs of brothers commemorated on the school's Great War Memorial. Their parents had no other children. They were the first cousins and near neighbours of John Lamburn and his sister Richmal. John Lamburn attended BGS, where his father taught Classics from 1876 until his death in 1915, while Richmal Crompton Lamburn went on to become the creator of 'Just William', whose activities were partly based on those of her brother and his schoolmates. Arthur Smith is buried in Daours Communal Cemetery Extension. http://bgsarchive.co.uk/authenticated/Browse.aspx?SectionID=164&tableName=ta_boys_rollofhonour Edited 9 June , 2018 by Mark Hone
