First piece tonight "Holst's elegiac Ode to Death: a setting of transcendentalist poet Walt Whitman's 'When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd' and composed by Holst in honour of his friends who lost their lives in World War I."

 

Also includes Vaughan Williams' Sinfonia Antarctica & Beethoven's Emperor Concerto.

Ode to death also features in this coming Friday's (27 July) Prom, alongside Parry's 5th Symphony (B minor), RVW Lark Ascending, Parry, "Hear my words, ye people" (then the Holst), finishing with RVW's Pastoral Symphony (which draws on his wartime experience).  BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Martyn Brabbins, Tai Murray (violin), Francesca Chiejina (soprano), Ashley Riches (Bass baritone), BBC National Chorus of Wales.
