Remembered Today:

Help please.. could this be my Granpy's helmet

My Grandfather, William (Bill) Coleman was a Royal Marine in WW1. I know he served as I have his papers and I also know that he was at the scuttling of the German Fleet at Scapa Flow. My Mum has just passed away and while clearing out the house I have found the helmet shown below. I am not certain whether this is of the correct era .. I guess back then the Royal Marines did not have the bobble on the top of the helmet?

I appreciate that you won't be able to tell me whether it is his actual helmet but perhaps you can tell me if the badge goes with the helmet and whether it is of the correct era please?

Many thanks

Richard

The helmet is the type generally known as the Wolseley. The badge on it is for the Royal Marines, who still use the same pattern today for dress purposes. The badge on it however has what collectors generally call the Queens Crown (ie post-1952).

This is the new other ranks helmet plate brought into service by AFO 522/53 (19 Jun 53) which substituted the St Edward's crown for the previousTudor crown.

Thank you for your responses .. so I glean that the badge does not go with the helmet?? And the helmet is older than the badge??

i am guessing my Mum got these items to honour her father but they were not his.

Really apprecaite your input.

I meant the Wolseley is still used today by the RM. It's not impossible it's an older helmet with a newer badge added, but its current configuration cannot date any earlier than from the 1950's.
