#4841 Smith
At the time of his death it appears he was #194668, 346th Home Service Works Company, Labour Corps when he died in July 1918. The effects records show he died of pneumonia at York. It doesn't appear he served overseas so the £9 (gross) war gratuity would give 28 months qualifying service at the time of death. This indicates enlistment in the month from 7 March 1916 if he had no break in qualifying service.

Try the 1901 or 1911 census on FMP or Ancestry to build up a picture of their families and occupations.

As Craig has indicated FMP has service records for 5 of them so you don't have a difficult task in researching them .

Your local library may offer free access to FMP or Ancestry.

Hi James,

Just to clarify. The service files that Craig posted links to on FMP should also be on Ancestry. Both sites offer free trial periods. FMP (I'm not sure about Ancestry) also offers a monthly subscription. There is good general advice on researching a soldier on the Long Long Trail - see here
