ss002d6252 Posted 23 May , 2018 Share Posted 23 May , 2018 #4841 Smith At the time of his death it appears he was #194668, 346th Home Service Works Company, Labour Corps when he died in July 1918. The effects records show he died of pneumonia at York. It doesn't appear he served overseas so the £9 (gross) war gratuity would give 28 months qualifying service at the time of death. This indicates enlistment in the month from 7 March 1916 if he had no break in qualifying service. Craig

Ellis1918 Posted 23 May , 2018 Share Posted 23 May , 2018 Try the 1901 or 1911 census on FMP or Ancestry to build up a picture of their families and occupations. As Craig has indicated FMP has service records for 5 of them so you don't have a difficult task in researching them .

clk Posted 23 May , 2018 Share Posted 23 May , 2018 Hi James, Just to clarify. The service files that Craig posted links to on FMP should also be on Ancestry. Both sites offer free trial periods. FMP (I'm not sure about Ancestry) also offers a monthly subscription. There is good general advice on researching a soldier on the Long Long Trail - see here With respect to Charles Pearson, Forces War Records have a hospital admission/discharge register transcription for him which reads: First Name: Charles Surname: Pearson Age: 22 Rank: Lance Corporal Service Number: 13821 Years Service: 2 years 7 months Ailment: Nothing abnormal detected Date of Admission for Original Ailment: 21/06/1917 Date Discharged Back to Duty: 26/06/1917 Notes written in the Observations Column: Returned to duty. Extension. Religion: Wesleyan Notes written by FWR when Transcribing: Appendicitis originally noted in Disease column crossed through on source. 6 months Service in the Command. Regiment: Coldstream Guards Battalion: 5th (Reserve) Battalion Other unit info: No. 8 Company Archive Reference: MH106/1623 Representative Medical Records of Queen Alexandra's Military Hospital, Millbank, London Regards Chris
