Missing in Action 9th October 1917

Mentioned on the Tyne Cot memorial ?

 

Any information regarding this soldier would be appreciated please for a distant friend

 

I think Charles Jubb came from West Yorkshire

All much appreciated.....on the enquiry card what does a 'negative reply' mean please ?

It means that the ICRC couldn't find any trace of him.

 

at the base of the card is handwritten 'rien' (= nothing) and stamped 'negatif envoyé' (= reply sent saying nothing known)

the reference at the top, A30653, would be the  number allocated when the ICRC received the initial enquiry. The original letter was not kept.

When they say they could not find any trace of him, I take it that his body was never found....buried in the mud....

The ICRC would not be looking for the body. They would be checking with their own records and information received fom the Germans about PoWs or deaths in captivity.

 

As you say, body never found, could be buried in mud, obliterated beyond identification...
