Derek Black Posted 18 May , 2018 Share Posted 18 May , 2018 Can anyone explain what the role of a bicycle orderly was in an infantry battalion? I'd seen a newspaper obituary reference to a man as having been in this role at Aldershot before his Btn. left for France. The only reference on the forum I could find was in the passing by Grumpy among roles within the RAMC. Was it simply a dispatch rider of a sort? Cheers, Derek. Steven Broomfield Posted 18 May , 2018 Share Posted 18 May , 2018 As you infer, that would be my assumption too: an orderly equipped with a bike.
Ron Clifton Posted 18 May , 2018 Share Posted 18 May , 2018 The official War Establishments refer to "Bicycles (for intercommunication)". I read it as giving extra speed and mobility to a "runner". It doesn't appear that being a bicycle orderly was a dedicated specialist role, though: the bikes were used by whoever needed them at the time.
