Just wanted to share this poignant excerpt of a German artillery man's diary. The stark realism of losing his best buddy to a direct hit and his matter-of-fact recount of burying enemy (and "non-related" German) dead is quite blood chilling. 

I'll link to the Google Translate as it is quite adequate (and I feel lazy). I'm of course happy to clarify if any questions arise.

Just noticed the burial part isn't very clear; they literally just dragged the bodies to a shell hole by hacking an axe into the tunic of the fallen. A very hardboiled solution, but probably practical and sanitary given the various degrees of decomposition.
