Hi uncle George. Gutenberg obviously an excellent source. I might seek Mod advice on posting actual private researchers. There are any number of them and it might be a case of not favouring one over another?

For technical reasons, we've had to recreate Mike's account and as a result, he can no longer edit the first post. I'll lock this thread and he will start a new one.

Hello hello. After much ado I have a new, cunning plan. Many thanks to SPOF for his help. I still think it's a good idea to have a list of useful websites all in one place. I tried doing it by Blog but never quite got to grips with that. So, I have no decided to host it all on a wiki (which I find easier) . Have a look and let me know if you think this is an ok way to proceed and if you're happy with it, I might start a new thread.

Here it is, for what it's worth and I'm happy to add to it.

Whilst it's not a general accessible source, always useful to remind researchers to try and access the local church and parish records and magazines for any particular village etc or Local History Societies.... There's also a Roll of Honour database for most parts of the Country, so if you think Private X came from Little Sodbury, Somewhereshire, you can see if he's on a Memorial there..... and obviously to try and establish all that the family/enquirer knows, as little snippets can often be big clues that the inquirer doesn't appreciate the significance of.

Using a "family history" website is often useful to look at Census Returns, B, M & D and sometimes other Family Trees to establish/confirm or disregard information.

Just a thought to add if thought useful.

Good idea to have a complete listing of sources for cross referencing - Well Done, Mike and all
