Remembered Today:

Important/Useful Online Sources of Information 1914-1918

Recommended Posts

Here is a list of some of the online sources of information that will be useful to anyone researching the Great War. I will add to it when I remember more of them but feel free to suggest any I have missed (and there will be many). Obviously some of these will require a subscription.

Links highlighted in red require a subscription or some other method of payment.

If you think of a better thread title am open to suggestions

I don't subscribe to Find My Past at present if anyone wants to add links, feel free. (Mike)

Also it would be useful to say afterwards if it is Free or by Subscription- and if the latter, with whom. Sorry to give you extra work but I saw you did this with Scottish Records. Perhaps just say free unless marked 'SUB' ?

Just a thought, shouldn't this thread be under Virtual Library- where you have been a good past contributor ?

Possibly. Mod been in touch and I'm happy to let him/them decide.

Cheers Mike

Yes that makes sense. Will do and will add any useful ideas as and when I can. I'm not sure how many links the first post will accept so will see. It would be good to keep it all together so may be necessary in future to delete  or edit 2nd and 3rd post, if that's possible. We'll see

Actually Virtual Library should be in your list of important sources !

I suppose so. Re adding "Free" or "Subscription" might not be as straight forward. When adding any text after the link, it automatically becomes part of the link, unless someone knows how to edit without that happening?

crudely, insert it on the next line then back space to push it to the line above. But there must be a smarter way.

Hi Mike,

If you can find one, Soldiers Wills (£10) https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#soldiers

Free grave stone images from British War Graves http://www.britishwargraves.co.uk/

DSO/MC/DCM citations - sometimes uncensored versions of the LG version showing a specific unit, and often hand annotated to show a place and date for the award action - free - various downloads from the National Archives. Record series WO 391 (DCMs), and WO 389 (DSOs and MCs). Download "Search our records" from http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/#

Regards

Chris

The FIBIS Fibiwiki page First World War contains links to much information relating to records, either on that page, or through linked pages

https://wiki.fibis.org/w/First_World_War

Contains links to many other Fibiwiki pages such as

British Army

Royal Air Force, and

various Fronts such as Western Front etc. The latter includes mapping information

British Army https://wiki.fibis.org/w/British_Army contains a large section on records, including online sources, including  information about the pay sites such as Ancestry and findmypast.

Note: Due to recent changes to the GWF website, some of the footnotes may not work.

Cheers

Maureen

There are also maps and pics on

http://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ww1/home

which also has a handy Place Name and Trench name search facility on the Trench Maps page http://library.mcmaster.ca/maps/ww1/ndx5to40.htm10,300+ place names compiled from the maps in our collection. 10,500+ trench names derived from the book, "Rat's Alley: Trench Names of the Western Front 1914-1918," courtesy of the author, Dr. Peter Chasseaud.

Not shameless Dave, well deserved. The files you put up include two volumes not reprinted by N@MP, a fantastic resource. Well done!

Geoff's Search Engine

I think this one is sadly outdated now as the details are poss 10 or more years old? Unless used in conjunction with IFCP search to pick up newly-found casualties.

Scarlet Finders http://www.scarletfinders.co.uk/

One I can't locate for now is a very good 'abbreviations explained' website. Possibly on WFA?
