Various markings found on Canadian bayonet Ross MK II : C/I\ II - 12/15 (crown) 4 W G 749 ROSS RIFLE Co QUEBEC PATENTED 1907 (couronne) 4 (x2) - 196 C 1910 - MK II Thanks in advance for your help. JMB1943 Posted 2 May , 2018 Share Posted 2 May , 2018 C/l\ indicates ownership by Canadian Govt. II indicates the Mk. II bayonet. 12/15 indicates manufacture in December 1915 crown/4 indicates inspector #4 W/ G 479 is likely the unit marking W (Winnipeg ??); G 479 is usually taken as the rifle/rack number, so that the same bayonet is always fitted with the same rifle. 196 on the tang is not 196th Battalion; unit markings are never on the tang. I am interested in Canadian units that were defeated at LOOS on August 15, 1917. In addition, the 8th Battalion has tennu its position where I currently work.
