There are still a few places left for our seminar on Thursday. Here are the details:
Archives for London May Seminar (Thurs 3rd May, 6pm at London Metropolitan Archives)

‘Lady Ridley’s Scrapbook and Dinkie’s Diaries: Sources for a First World War Hospital’ (Karen Syrett, British Academy Archivist)

In 1915, Lady Ridley opened up her London home as a hospital for wounded officers. Photographs, drawings and poems in her scrapbook bear testament to the many soldiers who stayed there and the nurses who looked after them. One of those nurses was Aileen Maunsell, aka Dinkie. Her diaries record the day-to-day life of the hospital - the work, the pranks and the love affairs:

“The major had serious op to the head – Sister to special him…Mr Forsdick and Sister Moore engaged!!!!!...Air raid, Mr Davies very scared, nerve gone….Mr Walton sent me huge basket of lilac, tulips and narcissasis.” May 1918 (Dinkie’s spelling!)

Lady Ridley’s house is now the home of the British Academy. Karen Syrett, the Academy’s archivist, will share with us her research into the hospital. It is a strangely serendipitous story!
