Good Evening

 

Not really a contribution in the solving of the conundrum merely an aside in that this is a typical problem that "Guest" would have produced some wonderful balanced reasoning and bombarded us with statistical charts and possibly an answer.

Might have missed it whilst scanning through but what's the known context behind the ledger itself ?

I know its 4th battalion men and officers of the Coldstream Guards  just dont know what the numbers mean

something else I have just noticed  - the service numbers seems to stop way short of those used in ww1 - regimentally they topped out around 29,000- the highest I  can see is 23117 - around mid 1918 enlistment

The pioneers rather than the old reserve battalion ?

pioneers yes as dates cover the war and into 1919

the earliest date I can see is 3/10/15 so doesnt appear to cover anything in Uk as btn went to France Aug 15
