Recommended Posts

Good evening

The annual Chattri Memorial service will be on 10th June 2018.

" The Chattri is a memorial built to honour the Indian dead of the First World War. It stands on the Downs near Patcham at the place where Hindu and Sikh soldiers who died in Brighton war hospitals during 1914-1915 were cremated. It was unveiled by the Prince of Wales on 21st February 1921. "

From the Chattri Memorial Group website   http://chattri.org/

The ceremony   features Hindu, Sikh, and Christian religious observances , and is attended by various  civic officials, serving members of the forces,  representatives of ex-service organisations, the Indian Embassy, the Royal British Legion, the Western Front  Association. In fact the cross section of people who gather each year is impressive.

The service last about 45 minutes,. vehicles are allowed to drive near the monument on the day,. Please note that the site is on agricultural land, and quite high up, so 'sensible' footwear is advised.

There are no refreshment or toilet facilities:  But after the service, there is a usually an exhibition on the Indian Army, with free food, at a local school.
