Greg S. Posted 7 April , 2018 Share Posted 7 April , 2018 I am seeking information regarding my Great Uncle, George Williamson, 152910. KIA on October 15, 1918 in the Battle of Courtrai. With the help of others I have learned some details of his Unit's movement, (9th Battalion). I have also located his burial place (Cement House). I am seeking any additional information about y Great Uncle. I am seeking a photograph of some sort; there is no known pictures of my relative. This is of great importance to me, especially considering the 100th anniversary of his death is approaching this Fall. Thanks for any assistance! Mark1959 Posted 7 April , 2018 Share Posted 7 April , 2018 Greg His CWGC record shows he was exhumed and reburied. There is a trench map ref where his body was found. This battlefield burial is likely to be near where he was killed. Someone should be along to show you how to find where his body was originally. Langdon Posted 7 April , 2018 Share Posted 7 April , 2018 (edited) Greg, The original burial place of your great uncle was map ref. '29.A.27.cent' which is exactly in the middle of square 27 - as in this trench map dated two days before his death - 13th October 1918. For a satellite image move the blue button (transparency of overlay). The present day map co-ordinates are 50.8716, 3.2016. On the upper left of the image you'll see Winkel St Eloi where his body was later buried - in square 19. (29.A.19.d.6.2 / 50.8766, 3.1797). Hope this is of help, Mike Edited 7 April , 2018 by Langdon
Greg S. Posted 8 April , 2018 Author Share Posted 8 April , 2018 Thanks to everyone that replied! I'm encouraged by your helpfulness. Three months ago all I knew about my Great Uncle was his name, the date he was KIA and a general area of conflict. So, I'm encouraged that I will continue to locate information. Thanks again to all!
