Bardess Posted 7 April , 2018 Share Posted 7 April , 2018 I am really struggling with this man's military history. I can't find his MIC/Medal Roll [which may mean he didn't serve o/s] but he has entries in SDGW and SER. He was a teacher and his death was registered in Leeds as he died in 'Nthn G Hosp' What I don't understand is why he has above entries if he didn't serve o/s From Ancestry Name: G . H . Thompson Death Date: 13 Oct 1916 Death Place: Home Enlistment Place: Smethwick, Staffs Rank: L Corporal Regiment: Royal Engineers Regimental Number: 1757 Type of Casualty: Died Theatre of War: Home Comments: 2/3Rd N.M. ss002d6252 Posted 7 April , 2018 Share Posted 7 April , 2018 (edited) War gratuity shows 12 months or less qualifying service at the time of death - war gratuity could be paid to a man on home service, the only extra criteria was that he had to have had 6 months or more service (if no overseas service). This does give us a little more information over most men who only have the minimum gratuity as you can say that he enlisted between 14 October 1915 and 14 April 1916, if he had only home service.
