Steve the high ears on 98/05 aA bayonets made this way originally. There was never a cut away on muzzle rings for German imperial bayonets for 98/05 bayonet. The model of 98/05 is a lighter version of 98/02 bayonet and pfm 71/98 prior. Look at the muzzle on those models.it is originally a"high ear" muzzle ring. My collection is coming shortly to an end. I have and 35 bayonets ersatz and 98/05 but without any unit markings. Those I am not photographing as they are not something important. Regards.D. Unit marking = 14.A.F.II.8.H.17 After ww1 veterans nickel platEd their bayonets in service, for use as dress bayonets (usually this practice was from the wounded veterans). The existence of unit marking is a proof for this practice. Manufacturer= ERFURT Cannot see the date. Probably the date is 1911 as there is a capital "F" on the spine of the Crossguard (see photos) and according similar markings in other 98/05 bayonets

zuluwar2006 Posted 15 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 15 August , 2018 Here is a interesting Police bayonet.. It started service in 1916 as a standard WW1 combat 98/05 nA plain service bayonet.. Then inventoried in 1920 for the Weimar Republic,Then it was issued to the police and demilled by cutting a 'V' in the atachment area, and removing the press stud so it could not be attached to a rifle, it was only to be used as a sidearm thus getting around the Treaty of Versailles and not having to be inventoried as a weapon.. zuluwar2006 Posted 17 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 17 August , 2018 German Ersatz conversion of the T-back French M1874 sword bayonet for use with the 8 mm. M1888 Commission Rifle. The late Anthony Carter classified this Ersatz type as EB 116 in his writings. Alterations include milling of the M1874's distinctive brass pommel hump flat, milling away the muzzle ring adjustment screw, and milling away part of the muzzle ring to provide the added length needed to accommodate the M1888 barrel jacket. All of the original French markings are present. No German markings observed on this example.
