Guest Posted 31 March , 2018 Share Posted 31 March , 2018 Hi My great uncle was in AIF 13th battalion and was killed on 4 February 1917 at the Battle of Stormy Trench. Per Red Cross records, his body was seen in a trench around midnight on 4 February during the battle. He is not listed as having a grave and has a memorial on the wall at VB. However, his war records state that he was buried by Lieut Seymour Burial Officer (can't quite read it). The date of this entry is 2 months after his death. Can someone tell me what this means please? Many thanks Carol
BFBSM Posted 31 March , 2018 Share Posted 31 March , 2018 The note on 9 April, 1917 reads: Quote Buried by Lieut. Seymour, 5th Div. Burial Officer 54th B(attalio)n. His grave was probably subsequently destroyed in further actions after the date of his burial. Mark
sotonmate Posted 1 April , 2018 Share Posted 1 April , 2018 (edited) Carol I have occasionally seen here where original burial details have been found, so it might be possible to enquire of records at AWM or CWGC to see what they show. Might be that the ref on your form mentioning burial, 19/419/33, may be a burial list ? Someone here may know, possibly those who research unknown soldier graves ? For your interest I see that there is a video on YT of a visit to Stormy Trench with some guys discussing the area: Edited 1 April , 2018 by sotonmate
