Jim Hastings Posted 30 March , 2018 Share Posted 30 March , 2018 Dear all, An awful long time since I have posted, due to work and family commitments, nice to do so. I have been asked by a Learning Support Assistant often in my classes to see if I can find out anything about her London Scot relative, 4440/511086 L/Cpl John Gray who was KIA on 5th Sept 1917 and buried in Lagnicourt Hedge Cemetery. I have worked out he entered F&F in Oct 1915 and was highly likely wounded at Gommecourt as he was returned to UK on 3rd July 1916 He returned to F&F in June 1917 and was killed, as mentioned, 5th Sept 1917 A Private Fletcher is buried next to him, same Bn same date of death Know the forum has many London Scots experts, can any please give me an indication of what the London Scots were up to on 5th September 1917, WD entry or other source of details Many thanks Jim
Steven Broomfield Posted 30 March , 2018 Share Posted 30 March , 2018 Jim, the Regimental History states that the 56th Division had relieved the 3rd Division on the 4th September, but the 1/14th were in reserve in the Lagnicourt sector for a few days, so the chances are that Gray and Fletcher may well have been killed while on fatigues of some sort. If you PM me an e-mail address, I will ask the Regimental Archivist what he has - his records are pretty good. I'll be at RHQ on Tuesday evening (Association AGM), so will see him then. Steven Broomfield Posted 30 March , 2018 Share Posted 30 March , 2018 As it's a sopping wet Bank Holiday and Eastleigh's match has been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch, I did that which I should have done before and downloaded the WDs (a total of £10.50 and about 15 minutes' work - how unlike the Good Old Days). 5th September: two companies were on working parties, improving trenches - joining up laterally to create a solid line to improve communications and movement of reinforcements. No mention of casualties but presumably they were unlucky.
Jim Hastings Posted 31 March , 2018 Author Share Posted 31 March , 2018 Thank you very much Stephen, I started looking more into Gray due to the wet weather also. Does it say where they were working at all? Many thanks again, and a Happy Easter, weather better today Jim

Fattyowls Posted 31 March , 2018 Share Posted 31 March , 2018 (edited) You can access the internet, on a phone? Whatever will they think of next? I can't add anything to your quest other than to wish you luck, but it is good to have you back Mr Hastings. Pete. P.S. Dull, grey and threatening out here on the coast - the weather isn't very good either......
