Guest Posted 30 March , 2018 Share Posted 30 March , 2018 I am searching for information on my grandfather and planning commemorative events for the centenary of his VC, awarded for action on the Sambre Oise Canal on 4 Nov 18 when he was commanding 2 R Sussex. Hoping to connect with others connected, especially descendants of those killed in the action and who are buried at the cemetery at Rejet de Beaulieu. Commemorative site visit planned for 4.11.2018 in France followed by plaque unveiling at Bourton on the Water, Glos on 10.11.2018 and dedication of refurbished grave at Church Crookham, Hants on 11.11.2018. He was awarded his first DSO for action at the battle of Tsing Tao, China in Nov 1914, 2nd for action at Pontruet, France in Sep 1918. Unable as yet to trace citation for his MC. Wounded on S Beach at Gallipoli on 25.4.1915 and again on the Somme on 27.5.1918. Went on to rank of Maj Gen and commanded 4th Inf Div in BEF campaign ‘39-‘40 including evacuation from Dunkirk in June 1940. Col of Regt SWB after WW2. Steven Broomfield Posted 30 March , 2018 Share Posted 30 March , 2018 Andrew: no help to you, I'm afraid, but my old dad (RASC, 4th Division Petrol Company) was always proud of having served under your grandfather in the 4th Division in 1939/40. Gareth Davies Posted 30 March , 2018 Share Posted 30 March , 2018 Welcome to the GWF Andrew. I am responsible for organising the military contingent that will be at the event on 10 Nov 18 (I have that responsibility for the whole of the SW). It would be good to make contact in the next month or so. Sadly the forum won't let you send me a personal message until you have racked up a few more posts but once you get to those dizzy heights please do get in touch and we can exchange email addresses (I don't recommend that you post your email address publicly in here). PS - I wore the same rat as you back in 91.
JMB1943 Posted 30 March , 2018 Share Posted 30 March , 2018 (edited) Andrew, My grandfather enlisted in the 2RSR in October, 1914 and joined the battalion in France in January 1915. He served until demob in January 1919, and was one of only 6 men in his company to survive the war neither wounded nor killed. As an OR he would have known who your g’father was, but probably not vice versa. I believe that you need 5 posts to be able to use the PM system with Gareth.
