DCLI Posted 5 January , 2005 Share Posted 5 January , 2005 I am trying to find out what actions 115 Heavy Battery, 7th (Mixed) Bde, Royal Garrison Artillery undertook in 1914. They entered F/F on 02/10/14 and the Bty then headed straight to the Ypres Salient. I have just bought a group of medals to someone in this Bty and I was wondering if he might be eligible for a bar to his Star. I would also like to know what sort of artillery a Heavy Battery would have in these early years? Hope I am not asking too much. Thanks in advance. rflory Posted 5 January , 2005 Share Posted 5 January , 2005 115 Heavy Battery, RGA was formed from No. 100 Company RGA (another references states No. 5 Company) at Woolwich on 28 Sep 14, with four 4.7" Quick-Firing Guns. It crossed to France on 3 Oct 14 and landed at Havre the next day. It was attached to I Corps Heavy Artillery on 28 Oct 14 and took part with it in the Battles of Ypres. It opened fire at 2pm on 30 Oct 14 from near Klein Zillebeke and remained in action in that area until it was withdrawn on 22 Nov 14, on the relief of I Corps. From 23 Nov 14 until Mar 15 it served with 5th Division. I can find no evidence that it served with 7th Bde, RGA before 9 Oct 17. The battery's war diary for the period Oct 14 to Jun 15 can be found at the National Archives under WO95/212. He should have received a 1914 Star but you will have to check his Medal Index Card to find out if he was authorized a clasp. I do know that six of the seven officers who were with the unit when in landed in France were authorized clasps to their 1914 stars. Regards.
