Roland Wales, author of the recent biography of R.C. Sherriff, author of 'Journey's End', is providing a day by day centenary blog for 18-27 March 1918. This is looking at the experience of Sherriff's old battalion, 9/E.Surrey , in the German Spring Offensive, culminating in its last stand near Rosières on 26 March. The battalion was near St. Quentin when the offensive began, as in the play. The blog begins with 18 March, as that is when the play opens. It can be found on www.rolandwales.com under 'R.C. Sherriff and more'

On this day in 1918, my grandfather’s cousin Reuben was taken prisoner near Maissemy.

His war had begun on 6th September 1914 when he volunteered along with his brother Samuel ‘George’ at Wimbledon. They both joined the 2/East Surreys in Flanders n the Spring of 1915. Samuel ‘George’ was killed two weeks later leaving widow Alice ‘Louie’ to raise the baby son they had named after Samuel’s brother. Reuben would later serve in the 13th Bn. and finally the 9th Bn.
