Guest Posted 20 February , 2018 Share Posted 20 February , 2018 Could any old Ubique advise- a small problem in that I cannot distinguish between the various different terms of engagement of the pre-war army. I have a local casualty where by fluke, the Silver War Badge for the man with the next enlistment number pins my man's enlistment date to on or about 26th August 1907. By 1911 Census my man,Arthur Warner (DOW 10th November 1914, France) was in India with 63 Battery RFA. He died with 43rd Brigade, whose war diary is informative. But would this have been 6 years with the Colours and then reserve? My man married OCT/NOV 1911 at home-my experience is that men tended to marry towards or at end of engagement. It's only a moot point but it would be nice to hazard an informed guess as to whether he was with the Colours or a recalled reservist.
Ron Clifton Posted 21 February , 2018 Share Posted 21 February , 2018 Hello Mike Normal engagement terms for the RFA in our period were for six years with the Colours and six in the Reserve. Ron

Ron Thank you Ron- I suspected you would know the definitive answer. You pointed me at the right artillery brigade war diary for this man previously-and when I zapped it on Ancestry yesterday, it came up complete with no problems- will wonders neever cease!! In fact, it was so good that the war diary came up 3 times over. I have never previously come across a war diary like it- Pretty much the same- from each of the brigade's component units. Never mind-it gives me a narrative for the service of my man which is very useful
